Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Anybody who is sexually active is at risk for getting a sexually transmitted disease (STD). Most adults in the United States contract at least one STD before the age of 35. The most common STD in the United States is human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Untreated, all STDs have serious health consequences; some can cause death. In Pregnant women, STDs pose special risks to a developing fetus or newborn.

Because many people with STDs honestly do not know they are infected, many couples now see a clinician together for examination and STD testing before initiating a sexual relationship. STD testing is necessary to ensure that infections are detected and treated in a timely and appropriate manner.
