Many people also use tanning bed to get a tan. Tanning beds use bulbs that emit ultraviolet light, an artificial reproduction of the sun rays that brown the natural pigment of the skin. Many people are under the mistaken impression that tanning beds are safe alternatives to sun exposure. They do not realize that just 30 minutes in a tanning bed is equal to six to eight hours of nonstop sunning on the beach. So people who use tanning beds at their local tanning salon face the same risk of skin cancer as those who are out in the sun excessively. Skin cancer is caused by a lifetime of exposure to the sun.
