What Is Stress?

Stress is the body’s response to change. It is a normal reaction to certain situations or events in your life. The long-term physical effects of stress include nervous habits and problems sleeping or eating. Biting or picking your fingernails is an example of a stress-related habit.

Not all stress is bad. In fact, some stress is necessary. Positive stress can motivate you to do your best. For example, a small amount of stress can get you ready for a big game. Stress can also make you more alert and improve your concentration. This type of stress can help you perform to your fullest when faced with a big exam. Anything that causes stress is called a stressor. A stressor ranges from everyday annoyances to serious personal problems.
